Petrópolis
Petrópolis, founded in 1843 by the Brazilian Emperor D. Pedro II and is known as the Imperial City, with its several historical buildings and environment protection area. It belongs to the State of Rio de Janeiro and it is located only around 60 km from the capital of the State (city of Rio). Its population is around 256,000 and it is located 830 meters (2750 feet) above sea level.
The city is located in Serra dos Órgãos ("Organs' Sierra"), at the Valley of Quitandinha and Piabanha rivers and it is a popular touristic city. Beyond its weather, one of the main attractions is the Emperor's Summer Palace, which its now an imperial history museum.
In 1999 Petrópolis has become a technology center, with the arrival of LNCC (Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica - "Scientific Computation National Laboratory").
